Art
Artist Statement
There are two ways to understand something: through its presence and its absence. The absence of a sense of home, even in the presence of immense love, is stitched into my earliest years and has clung to me my whole life. Just like studying the footprints of an animal, I have learned so much about the philosophical sense of home by studying the empty spaces where homesickness wells. It informs my artwork which explores what it means to find a sense of home in our house, in our body and ourselves. Art has always been a home for me. More importantly, it has always been a home for the selves and experiences I refused to live alongside. Throughout my healing journey, art and God would occasionally find me on their doorstep, so homesick and humbled that I was willing to reach for the refugee parts of myself sheltering in the pages of my sketchbook. My artwork is a thesis on accepting all parts of ourselves and each other. The contours of each piece of artwork are hymns of unconditional love towards each person and myself. As an artist, my dream is to persuade people that no part of themselves is beyond the bounds of love.Â
